On May 22, 2026, Mare Nostrum (MN) organised an educational workshop dedicated to Black Sea biodiversity at Tăbăcăriei Park in Constanța, Romania. The workshop was held as part of the Biodiversity Day event organised within the NIDA (Erasmus+) project and brought together 20 students as part of a wider event attended by 45 participants.
The workshop introduced participants to the structure and functioning of the Black Sea marine ecosystem through an interactive activity using 18 three-dimensional models of marine species. Rather than learning about marine biodiversity only through theoretical explanations, the students worked directly with the models to explore relationships between different organisms and understand how species are connected through the food chain.
One of the main activities required participants to place the marine species at their appropriate trophic levels. Students were able to explore how organisms depend on one another and how energy is transferred between different trophic levels of a marine ecosystem by organising the species according to their position within the food chain.
The interactive format encouraged students to actively participate and discuss their observations throughout the activity. The workshop provided an accessible way for young participants to understand the functioning of marine ecosystems by connecting biodiversity with food-web relationships and energy transfer.
The activity was well received by participants and contributed to raising awareness of the importance of conserving the biodiversity of the Black Sea.
