On June 9, 2026, Mare Nostrum (MN) organised a series of four interactive educational workshops at Urban Forest Park in Constanța, Romania. The activities brought together 79 students from Secondary School No. 39 “Nicolae Tonitza” and focused on Black Sea biodiversity and the relationships that shape marine ecosystems.

The students participated in two activities on a rotating basis. In the first activity, they constructed a Black Sea trophic pyramid using illustrated cards representing different marine species. This allowed them to explore the position of different organisms within the food web and understand how species are connected through trophic relationships.

The second activity was based on role-playing. Students represented different marine species and worked together to form a food chain. By physically creating the connections between species, they were able to explore the relationships between organisms in a more interactive way.

The workshops provided an opportunity for students to move beyond traditional classroom learning and engage directly with concepts related to marine ecology. Through the combination of visual materials, participation and role-playing, the students strengthened their understanding of trophic relationships within the Black Sea ecosystem.

The activities also highlighted the importance of biodiversity conservation. Participants gained a better understanding of why maintaining the diversity and balance of the Black Sea ecosystem is important by learning how different species are connected within marine ecosystems.
