On July 3, 2026, the Institute of Fish Resources (IFR) in Varna hosted a special hands-on workshop for an enthusiastic group of students from Sofia State University as part of their practical field training.
Rather than a standard lecture, the session dove straight into the heart of Black Sea ecology. Using 17 detailed 3D models of marine species, researchers and students explored the intricacies of local food webs, trophic relationships, and the unique challenges facing the Black Sea. The discussion paid special attention to commercially important species, the conservation status of native wildlife, and how invasive newcomers can disrupt established food chains.
The group also tackled the bigger picture, examining the primary threats to regional biodiversity and discussing practical, science-based measures to mitigate human impacts.
A key highlight of the day was the introduction of the BLACKPYRAMID citizen science application. Students got a live demonstration of how the app works and were invited to take part by contributing their own underwater and coastal photos to support ongoing research and conservation tracking.
By blending academic theory with innovative tools and tactile learning, the workshop gave the university students a fresh, dynamic perspective on Black Sea fauna—and inspired the next generation of marine stewards!
