On 27 July 2026, the Institute of Fish Resources (IFR) organised an educational workshop at Primorski, 4, in Varna, Bulgaria, for 21 primary school students aged up to 12. The activity was organised specifically for young participants by the Center for Personal Development Support and the Center for Career Orientation of the Municipality of Varna.

The workshop introduced children to the biodiversity of the Black Sea and the specific characteristics of its marine environment. Through an educational presentation, participants learned about the diversity of marine life and the ecological features of the Black Sea basin.

To make the learning process more engaging, 3D-printed models of marine species were used to explain pelagic and benthic trophic chains and the functioning of the Black Sea ecosystem. These models helped children explore the relationships between marine organisms and understand how different species are connected within the ecosystem.

The workshop also introduced participants to native, endangered and protected marine species. Information about the influence of invasive species on food chains was presented, allowing the children to explore some of the ecological challenges affecting the Black Sea.

The main threats to biodiversity were highlighted, and measures to reduce their impact were discussed in an age-appropriate way. The BLACKPYRAMID citizen science application was also demonstrated, and students were invited to contribute photographs and videos to support biodiversity-related observations.

Following the presentation, the children were invited to visit the aquarium exhibition, where they had the opportunity to see Black Sea organisms in person. This practical experience complemented the educational activities and helped connect the information presented during the workshop with the living marine environment.

The workshop provided children with an engaging introduction to Black Sea flora and fauna and the importance of conserving marine biodiversity by combining presentations, three-dimensional models, citizen science and an aquarium visit.
