Raising Awareness for the Black Sea People to Recognize and Protect Black Sea Biodiversity (BIOBLACK)
This system has been developed with a citizen science approach to encourage public participation in marine research and to increase awareness regarding Black Sea biodiversity.
The Kick-Off Meeting of the project BIOBLACK (BSB00794) – “Raising Awareness for the Black Sea People People to Recognize and Protect Black Sea Biodiversity” was held online (via Zoom) on October 13, 2025.
Coordinator: Karadeniz Technical University, Faculty of Marine Sciences, Trabzon TÜRKİYE
Duration: 18 months (31.07.2025 - 30.01.2027)
Partners: 3 partners from 3 countries (Türkiye, Bulgaria, Romania)
Biodiversity in the Black Sea is increasingly threatened by overfishing, invasive alien species, habitat degradation, pollution, marine litter, climate change, by-catch, ghost fishing, and the overexploitation of natural resources. These transboundary pressures require coordinated action among countries, institutions, and local communities.
The project aims to raise public awareness and support the protection of Black Sea biodiversity by introducing native, alien, endangered, and extinct species to key stakeholders. Educational activities will use 3D-printed marine organisms, field surveys, and underwater imagery to explain the Black Sea food web.
A citizen science application, BLACKPYRAMID, integrated into the project website, will allow citizens to upload observations via mobile devices, supporting awareness, data collection, and regional cooperation.
